Reading the NLT with YouVersion

If you have a smartphone (or an iPad), you need to know about YouVersion. It is a great tool that helps me to read my Bible regularly when I have some downtime. And for the next three months, you’ll be able to download the NLT to make your reading experience more seamless.

The good folks at LifeChurch.tv provide this free service as an application on virtually every mobile platform, and they are lightning fast at getting good, user-friendly apps available on new platforms as they come on the market. You can currently read the Bible on iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and even the new Windows 7 phone, launching today.

YouVersion rolled out a new version of their iPhone application this week, and along with it we are pleased to let you know that the NLT is available for download as an offline version from now until 1/31/11. The benefit of downloading the NLT as an offline version on your phone is that it will be available to you even when you don’t have a data connection, and moving from chapter to chapter as you read is much faster.

Give reading the Bible on your mobile device a try. I think you’ll find that it is very rewarding. If you do already use a mobile device to read your Bible, share about your experience in the comments.

Right after I announced that the availability of the NLT for download in YouVersion was about to end, Tyndale and YouVersion decided to extend the offer for another 30 days to accomodate all of the new iPad owners. YouVersion has a classy HD app for the iPad and until May 5 you can download the NLT to use in this app. Your download won’t expire after that time, but if you try to download it after then, you will be out of luck.

The NLT currently has offline availability on YouVersion for iPhone, but the 90 day download window is approaching its end. If you don’t use YouVersion, I do recommend it; and if you do use YouVersion, I recommend you download the NLT by April 5! Instructions on the YouVersion blog.

Tyndale House Publishers ~~The Tyndale Foundation~~ and our friends at LifeChurch.tv have been working together to make the NLT available to you offline on the YouVersion iPhone App. You have a 90-day window in which to download it, but the content won’t expire after 90 days (or ever) after it’s downloaded. The NLT on YouVersion

The NLT made its debut on YouVersion yesterday. YouVersion self-describes as “A revolutionary online Bible that enables community and collaboration like never before.”

Sam Duregger announced the update on the YouVersion blog yesterday and it has been fun to watch the response in the form of dozens of enthusiastic tweets from YouVersion users.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out YouVersion yet, I recommend it. It’s the best instance so far (in my opinion) of the Bible on the social web and it also offers tools for personal notetaking and organizing if that’s what you prefer.

YouVersion has tons of functionality, and some of the most notable are its mobile applications, including iPhone and Blackberry apps. Keith Williams tells me from a conversation with Bobby Gruenewald that there are over half a million users of the iPhone app who have spent an average of almost five hours each reading the Bible on it.

Thanks to the YouVersion team for the work on getting the NLT onto YouVersion. It’s great to see talented people using their skills in service of the Church.
